Industrial Energy Management in the 21st Century

Industrial Energy Management in the 21st Century is a 21/2-day workshop aimed at improving the participants' knowledge and understanding of the various principles involved in designing and operating processes at optimum energy efficiency. The primary focus is on processes, equipment and utilities in the oil refining, chemical and petrochemical industries. The workshop includes lectures, working sessions, discussion time and software.

This program also incorporates the Energy Efficiency Showcase, a parallel event in which a select group of equipment manufacturers and service providers will present their products for the benefit of the workshop participants. This will include tabletop displays, opportunities for informal discussions, and presentations interspersed at appropriate points in the workshop agenda. Showcase participants include TLV Corporation, Soteica Ideas & Technology LLC, and Aspen Aerogels.

The overall objective is to provide participants with a firm grounding in the principles of energy management, and at the same time introduce them to organizations that can help them implement energy efficiency programs. Participants are thus prepared to achieve real world energy efficiency improvements at their facilities.

Workshop Topics:
(A more detailed curriculum is included in a separate PDF document.)

  • Introduction: Overview of Energy Use
  • Energy Technology & Thermodynamics
  • Steam Systems
  • Other Utility Systems
  • Process Heat Integration
  • Key Process Equipment Items
  • Energy Efficiency Programs

Introduction to Pinch Analysis

Pinch analysis is a powerful tool for process design to minimize energy use. This 11/2-day course, immediately following Industrial Energy Management in the 21st Century, teaches the basic principles of energy targeting, multiple utility targeting and heat exchanger network design. The course incorporates lectures and computerized working sessions using PinchExcel, Rossiter & Associates' proprietary pinch package.

Course Topics:
(A more detailed curriculum is included in a separate PDF document.)

  • Background to Pinch Analysis
  • Energy Targeting & Composite Curves
  • Heat Exchanger Network Design
  • Multiple Utility Targeting & the Grand Composite Curve
  • Retrofit Design
  • Industrial Examples

Who Should Attend?
Introduction to Pinch Analysis is aimed at energy managers and engineers involved in plant operation, troubleshooting and process design in the oil refining and chemical & petrochemical industries. It will be particularly helpful to engineers who expect either to carry out pinch work themselves, or to participate in or manage pinch work conducted by others.

Important Details
Course hours: Thursday Sep. 30: 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; registration & continental breakfast from 7:45 a.m.
Friday Oct. 1: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon; continental breakfast from 7:30 a.m.
